ABOUT US

The Peter Condakes Company began in 1900 with a newly arrived immigrant who wanted a better life and was prepared to work hard for it.

Not long after arriving from Greece, our founder, grandfather, and great-grandfather Peter J. Condakes (affectionately known as “P.K.”) began selling fresh fruits and vegetables from a pushcart on the streets of Boston to support his wife and seven children. Through long hours, a passion for his work, and unwavering dedication to his family, he progressed from pushcart peddler to wholesale operator upon acquiring his own location on Boston's old Commercial Street. From these humble beginnings, The Peter Condakes Company blossomed into one of New England's largest fruit and vegetable carload receivers.

By the 1950's, the company had relocated to C Street in South Boston and became a major force in the area's produce industry. Much of this growth can be attributed to five of Peter's children––John, George, Leo, James, and Pauline––who each oversaw and expanded different products including tomatoes, lettuce, East Coast vegetables, citrus fruit, apples, and more.

By 1974, the year of Peter's death, the company had packing and distribution plants in both the New England Produce Center and the Boston Market Terminal. Thousands of tons of fruits and vegetables were purchased by the company, eventually making the trip to dinner tables from New England to the Canadian Maritimes.

Nearly a century later, Peter’s grandchildren have maintained the company’s long standing tradition of quality and outstanding customer service, from a multi-million dollar investment in procurement and fulfillment to implementing new equipment and techniques to enhance produce safety and freshness.

While a lot has changed after being in business for over one hundred years, our future growth is still predicated upon this simple lesson passed down to us by our founder: "Provide our customers with the best possible product at the fairest possible price."

That is our mission, and our promise to you.
